New Mental Health Resource for Educators in NAMI’s College Guide
Since 2022, the Mental Health College Guide has helped more than 50,000 young adults navigate their college years. College life is about more than taking classes; it’s a time of transition, when young adults branch out into new support systems and become independent.
Created in partnership with The Jed Foundation, the College Guide is a one-stop online resource designed to help young adults understand mental health through the pressures of college.
Now, the College Guide has expanded to include new resources for college educators! In the new section for educators, professors, TAs, and administrators can find advice and strategies for providing support to students who are struggling. For educators who have ever wanted to understand their students’ approach to mental health, the College Guide can help with information such as:
- Examples of including mental health information into course materials
- Ways to support first-year students in their transition to independence
- How to recognize when a student is struggling
- Where to find mental health supports
- An exploration of social media’s influence on mental health
- What students look for in mental health support – and how educators can help
Insights, Strategies and Resources for Educators and Students
In the Mental Health College Guide, both students and educators will find information about the importance of self-care, how to be proactive about your mental health, and ways to find mental health services and supports.
The Mental Health College Guide provides insights into students’ approaches to mental health, emphasizing the importance of self-care and proactive engagement. By understanding these aspects, educators can better recognize when students are struggling and offer appropriate support.
The guide suggests practical strategies for educators, such as incorporating mental health information into course materials and encouraging participation in campus mental health events. It also highlights the significant impact educators can have on student well-being, noting that faculty interactions can positively influence students’ mental health outcomes.
Additionally, the guide provides information on available mental health services and supports, both on-campus and nationally. By familiarizing themselves with these resources, educators can effectively direct students to appropriate support systems. The guide also underscores the importance of educators’ self-care, offering resources to help them manage their own well-being, which in turn enables them to better support their students.
